Best AUDs at The Archive

BUMP! BUMP!

Hope everyone had a happy and safe new year. I would like to express an extra special new year's kudos to Microdot, who has kept me VERY busy the past couple weeks with his contributions to the list below. From my count, he is responsible for recommending 65 of the shows below. He found some really special shows and I can't thank him enough for taking part in this effort.

I will of course continue to add to the list and I encourage you to keep those recommendations coming in. If you are looking for some years to explore, we are still a little light from '75-'78, '88-'91, and we don't have anything yet from '92 on.

Thanks again and have a grateful 2006!

Hey Ben - we can do this pretty efficiently if we divide up and assign years. Give me a few years and I'll get cracking. Anyone else reading this -- this is a great idea! Join in the fun!

Don't worry Ben, there's "help on the way": 4-21-84

Oh and 1-15-79 is my other favorite aud; enjoy it and thanks to everyone for all of the other suggestions. I can't wait to dive in! Jonathan is right -- great idea Ben!

Jonathan - Not a bad idea. Let's see how this takes off, if we have some regular contributors, maybe we can give some folks some years to concentrate on.

For now, just let 'em roll in. Thanks Stewart, keep 'em coming!

Alright Stewart! Two more is an awesome addition to what Ben's come up with already.

stewart- 1.15.79 is a great call! 1.8, 1.10, & 1.11 are also worth having.

1974- A fellow named Jerry Moore taped numerous Wall of Sound shows on the East Coast. His Miami 6.23.74 was widely circulated on tape "back in the day." His recordings are wonderfully ambient and fully demonstrate the clarity of the WOS even with 1974 audience taping technology. I have every one he did from that year and enjoy them whenever they find my CD player.

There is also a recording from 5.17.74 Vancouver that is great fun, though the complete show does not currently circulate.

Rob Bertrando made a wonderful recording of 7.21.74 for which no board circulates (or possibly exists in the Vault).

There is an aud from the Universal Amphitheatre 7.1.73 that is quite lovely. Jerry's guitar comes through with particular depth.

I would add May 15th, 1981 - RAC, otherwise known as Rutgers Athletic Center to the list. I'm a soundboard snob all the way, but I must admit that the recording quality of this AUD surprised me - it's much better than most. I must say, though, that 1981 seems to be a pretty good year in general for high quality audience recordings - who knows why?

This particular show also has a fond spot in my heart for two reasons: one - I had the tape of the second set of this show back in 1982 and listened to it constantly…..ahhhh, fond memories - and two - I grew up in New Jersey and have several siblings that have graduated from Rutgers University.

One last thing - this show had one of those Scarlet-Fires that was augmented by a real lightening storm (due to the glass dome ceiling at the RAC) and the crowd was very high energy as a result - it shows up on tape. The same thing happened at SPAC on June 18th, 1983 – a great show, although I’m biased because I attended this show on an unusually great dose of some illicit substance obtained in the parking lot – great atmosphere up in Saratoga Springs as well.

That’s my two cents, for what it’s worth. Thanks for the blog.

This is embarrassing, but I had never heard (or heard of) 8/6/71 at the Hollywood Palladium. What an awesome aud and show! I instantly downloaded it last night. Thanks for the tip Ben. "Woo! Woo!"

Stewart - Yeah, that '71 Hollywood show is a true classic, especially the Hard To Handle!

Check out the '88 Irvine Meadows show too. I just found that myself last night. Outstanding.

More great contributions, I'm trying to get a listen to each of them before I add them to the list. So far, so good.

Hey Now! Great idea!

I think that just about anything taped by the Oade brothers will be a top quality AUD. As far as I know, most of the Oade tapes on the archive are 1985 shows. A couple of highlights from that year are: 11/1, 6/24, 7/1, 9/7. Also, I think the Oades' 86 Greek recordings are on the archive.

Cheers! look forward to checking out your blog further

Coming out of Attics, I think, you can hear an audience member gasp "My god!!" as the music begins to take a sinister turn.

Hey Ben, I don't have any ideas about downloading the videos from my blog. Some people seem to be able to do it fine and others can't. I know it takes me a long while for it to work but other than that I can't offer any help.

aoxoa - Thanks for the contribution. The shows included on The Archive all appear to be from different sources. The 5/10 show wasn't very good quality, but the other two, the Radio City show in particular is excellent. Thanks again!

Ok, folks, here’s another one. I had emailed David Lemeiux about these shows two years ago and he actually responded with a ‘tell me why, aside from the funky rented instruments, should these shows be released as a Dick’s Pick?’. Frankly, I couldn’t come up with a scale tipping justification that would have these shows come screaming out of the vault, so I sort of let it go, aside from blathering on about how unique these shows were, etc. (I wound up sounding sort of dumb, I guess).

The dates were in Amsterdam in October of 1981 – the 15th and 16th, at the Club Melk Weg. Archive had the board tapes of these shows and, since I blew right by the audience versions, I failed to notice the October 15th show recorded with the following lineage: Senheiser-pro-direction.>New Marantz cass.rec. I’m streaming it now – it sounds pretty tasty for an audience recording. I’m not sure if both nights of this run were played with the cheap rented instruments but, it’s always a treat to hear the Dead in a smaller venue far away from their typical stomping grounds (MSG, Greek Theater, etc.). Give it a listen, although the 16th is a more interesting night. My personal opinion is that they seem to play better (or at least more strangely) when they’re a bit uncomfortable with their surroundings.

Westchester - 10/15 is a good one. The 16th though is a SBD with AUD patches on The Archive though. Thanks again.

Hey Ben- 3/27/89 and 3/28/89 are both pretty sweet. I'm going through the 1989 AUDs right now, so I'll have a more complete list later, but those are the ones that stand out right now. Awesome "Eyes" on 3/27, fwiw.

I just downloaded the 9/20/70 show at the Filmore East. Jerry's long time friend Dave Grisman joins in at the beginning of the show for an acoustic set with the band. Aside from a ongoing hiss in the background it's a really good listen. I've always enjoyed Jerry on acoustic guitar and you'll find him singing like a charm on the first set.

At 9:54 PM, Blogger Ben said...

Jonathan - You are right about that Eyes on the 27th. Keep 'em coming!

Anonymous - Very interesting. I downloaded this before they took away the ability to download SBDs. It appears to be, and sounds like a SBD, but could it be an AUD afterall? Hmmm. Great show though, one of my favorites from that year.

Found some killer auds from 1970. The sound quality is really good considering they're 35+ years old and the equipment used.

03/21/70 Capitol Theater (early show)- The mix is great on this, but there are some minor panning flaws starting at Me & My Uncle. It stops about half way through Death Don't Have No Mercy<-killer version btw. Another highlight is Viola Lee Blues, which starts out in high energy 1968 mode, then settles into some jazzy improv.

03/21/70 Capitol Theater (late show)- Great acoustic set, but the electric kicks butt. Some nice jamming on Not Fade Away & Midnight Hour.

11/08/70 Capitol Theater - I love this acoustic set. The Ripple here is beautiful. Jerry's vocals are in top form. The electric set is incredible. Here's the set list:
Disc Three

12/28/70 Legion Stadium, El Monte, CA - This show sounds the best to me out of the whole bunch. I found myself forgeting I was listening to an aud. This has a very strong first set. Check out the funky effect Jerry used on Sugar Magnolia. It's like an envelope follower/phase shifter that produced a wah sound with swirling tracers. Maybe some pre Mutron III prototype.

I'm exploring 1971 auds next so I'll post any gems I might find.

Hey Now, this list is looking great! I'd like to second the '82 Red Rocks run. I threw in 7/27 the other day and was flat-out blown away by the second set. A classic!

At 10:44 PM, Blogger Ben said...

Pfhew! Just got finished with all of Microdot's recommendations! Mega-Thanks and keep 'em coming, 3 - 4 at a time instead of 50 was a bit easier to handle ;-)

Got a few years to fill in still, I just found a sweet '77 show myself. The kind words are much appreciated as always.

At 9:30 PM, Anonymous Microdot said...

Oops! Sorry about that;p hehe

I didn't have much luck with '71. I downloaded the jam in Mickey's barn, but that's not really GD. It's Mickey, Phil, Jerry, Bob, David Crosby and John Cippolina. It reminds me of Mickey & the Heartbeats from '68. Good stuff.

Speaking of good stuff:

04/29/72 - Musikhalle - Hamburg, Germany
Europe '72! Good sound & great set list. The only that would make this show better would be a Truckin' or Morning Dew...maybe a Bird Song. Oh well, The 30 minute Dark Star kicks butt.

06/10/76 - Boston Music Hall - Boston
The only thing keeping this from being an A+ aud is the vocals aren't very clear...it's not that bad, just not the best. The instruments are pristine and at times beautiful sounding. Keith was on fire on the piano. He took many solos and was playing his ass off.

07/16/76 - Orpheum Theatre - San Francisco
This show is sweet! I found myself drawn into a state of bliss from the start. Gets intense from Scarlet Begonias on. The Playing In The Band > Stronger Than Dirt was tight as well as a mid 70's Spanish Jam. This is a new favorite for me..wish I could've beent there.

09/27/76 - Community War Memorial - Rochester, NY
This shows sound is just as good as 07/16. The 2nd set is wicked.

Well that's it for me cuz my work is done. I think lots of people will find this blog very useful. I'm sure people not familiar with GD just download a couple of shows with ***(Ben's fav). They'll hear what the Grateful Dead is all about.

I'll be sure to direct people here & share this music with the world.

Right now I'm listening to 12/11/88 from Long Beach Arena. Very high quality aud from the archive, no reviews on their site either, must be a fairly overlooked show. Nice song selection...Iko opens 1st set, Box 2nd. Above average Foolish Heart is the highlight for me. Highly recommended.

Hey here's a thought. We all have the same auds, there could be like a "show of the week" post reviews etc. I have 200+ sbds and since I've gotten into auds, it's like I'm rediscovering GD yet again. Even the shows that I have sbd for sounds better.

One quick addition, spurred by a recent post on LMA:

12/15/86 not a fantastic recording over at LMA, but an extremely historically significant show (Jerry's first performance with the Dead after his coma) and some really great crowd reaction, especially on Touch and Candyman

Thanks soooo much for this list.
After the soundboards were taken away, it has been hard to wade through all of the different shows...
I wish LMA would let SBDs vs. AUD be a search option!
Anyway, a million thanks to all who are helping compile this list!!

I have to nominate 05-07-1979 - Lafayette College as a worthy AUD. I found it by chance on the Archive. It has the fastest Eyes I have ever heard, a Shakedown with plenty of zip, and a monster 15 minute NFA.

At 8:55 PM, Blogger Ben said...

How could we of missed that one! What a barnburner! A high-energy classic from start to finish. Thanks for recommending it!

At 10:59 AM, Blogger Joby said...

Heya Ben, there's a new Retro Review posted over at my blog, of a show I think should be added to your list here. 7/29/88, Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey California. There's a great version over at LMA, which in fact is in dispute if their copy is actually an aud or sbd. But whichever, it is still available for download and it sounds GREAT. Check it out if you get a chance, and let me know what you think.

At 9:36 AM, Blogger JR Fishman said...

I've got a version of an aud of 12/5/81 on DAT that I transferred to SVHS audio many years ago. There was another aud (very good one at that) torrented on bt.etree.org last year, but its not the version that I have.

This is a pretty fine show - however, the audience recording version I have is amazing. The first time I played the SVHS tape thru my 5.1 home theatre system, I heard somebody cough (on the tape). I was fooled - I turned around to see if it was my kids. Thats how good the audience tape is.

I need to find the original DAT and have somebody do a proper DAT>HD transfer.

At 3:20 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Here is the tallest AUD source request of all (perhaps you've seen tougher?)

Would down a whole pint of Jim Beam in one sitting if I could locate a copy of 8-25-72 @ Berkeley Comm Thea

At 9:57 PM, Blogger Ben said...

JR - Checked out the SBD version on The Archive, and WOW, what a show. The Ramble on Rose on that recording is from an AUD source and sounded very nice, wonder if it's the same source as yours? Let us know if you ever get that up on The Archive, that might be worth 5 stars if it sounds as good as you say!

Anonymous - Tall order indeed. I've built this list soley off of The Archive, so if it isn't there... But if anyone has an AUD copy of this fine show that they would like to share with the world, please load it up!

At 4:29 PM, Blogger JR Fishman said...

Yes Ben

that 12/5/81 Ramble on Rose is probably from that "phat" aud

Yessss!!!!!

First of all, I'd like to say I just stumbled upon this blog/group of aud. enthusiasts and I'm so psyched. I love great audience recordings and find them the champagne of live recorded dead shows.

OK that out of the way, awesome list so far can't wait to fully explore it. Alot of the usual suspects I see and are familiar with but I just heard Winterland 6/9/77. What a fantastic discovery this gem is !!!!! One of the finer recordings of gd that I have heard. Simply a great performance and a "you are there" recording. I always wondered what spring sounded like from the audience point of view. This one captures it. Just immediately made my top 5.

Thanks for putting this together Ben. I'll be back often.

Heres a few:

5/7/80 - Barton Hall - (clugston source)

3/25/85 - Springfield, MA (I can't access the archive at the moment but there is a solid aud listed there)

6/27/85 - SPAC (I actually prefer the other FOB source over the Oade's - both are solid, you decide Ben)

Thanks, Again, Ben

At 12:58 PM, Anonymous august west said...

addendum -

3/25/85 - Springfield, MA (Once again I prefer the Nak 300 source over the Oade recording - this one is an easy pick)

At 1:24 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

6/22/73 is a fantastic-sounding audience, a great relief from the flat-sounding boards of that era. Of the many jams based on the He's Gone > Truckin > Other One axis of this period, this is truly one of the very best, quite comprehensive in that it includes a Nobody's Fault jam, a Phil solo AND a Keith solo. Avoid at your own peril.
